Department of Sports Media Management at a Glance

At the peak of its development, physical education was divided into four subdisciplines of exercise physiology, sports management, motor behavior and biomechanics. Consequently, the academic circles sought to train students who were qualified enough to work in organizations and departments. Moreover, existing subdisciplines developed into disciplines in their own right, and new subdisciplines emerged. As a new discipline, sports management have different subdisciplines at master and Ph.D. levels.

As per the act ratified by the MSRT Supreme Council of Educational Planning in its 786th  session on 26 September 2011, a master’s program in sports management was launched with the following six subdisciplines:

  • Sports Media Management
  • Sports Marketing and Management
  • Sports Facilities Management
  • Free Time and Recreational Sports Management
  • Strategic Management of Sports Organizations
  • Sports Events Management

Duration and Details

Physical education is an educational course that focuses on fulfilling the potentials, maintaining the health and enhancing the performance of humans. Sports management and its subdisciplines cover all aspects of sports management. It embraces the scientific findings in management and organization. Its graduates would play an important role in running sports organizations.

Master’s program in sports management seeks to train professional experts who are qualified to run the national sports organizations and institutes. It also aims to train Ph.D. experts who would join the academic staff of universities and higher education centers. Graduates of master’s program in sports media management would have the opportunity to run sports media efficiently.

It takes two years to complete a master’s degree in a subdiscipline of sports management. Its courses are mainly theoretical and research-based. Each semester lasts for 17 weeks, and each theoretical course lasts for 16 hours. Each practical course lasts for 32 hours. The students should write and defend a thesis to graduate from the program.

The students are expected to take 32 credits in order to complete a master’s program in a subdiscipline of sports management.

Note 1: The practical and theoretical makeup courses are reviewed and determined by the department and approved by the Higher Education Council of the Faculty of Physical Education. They are offered for a maximum total of 12 credits and are not included in 32 required credits.

Note 2: The students are expected to pass two credits in specialized language and two credits in computer application in sports. These credits are not included in 32 required credits.

Note 3: Except for thesis, all theoretical and practical courses are two credits.

Note 4: The students should pass 26 credits (and some credits in makeup courses) to take the six-credit thesis.

The graduates would have the opportunity to engage in the following activities:

  • Teach sports management courses at associate and bachelor levels.
  • Teach in workshops participated by managers of sports organizations, sports analysts and members of sports community.
  • Run governmental and private sports organizations.
  • Run sports centers and clubs.
  • Run sports locations.
  • Work in editorial boards of sports media.
  • Analyze and comment on sports events and issues.
  • Work as managing directors or chief editors of sports media.
  • Offer counseling services to senior managers of sports organizations.
  • Works as public relations or international relations managers in sports organizations.
  • Teach in workshops on sports media.

The master students who have a bachelor’s degree in physical education should take a total of 36 credits. Those students with different bachelor’s degrees should also take 12 makeup credits and complete a total of 48 credits.

Note 1: The students of education-based master’s program should take three two-credit courses instead of a six-credit thesis.
